The big week 20!

Current mood: exhausted

Yep little Mia is the big 20! She is 20 weeks today! So many big events happened this week but luckily.. I was pro active and already mentioned a few in an earlier blog this week. The other two huge events, her first Thanksgiving and first Oxnard trip are also separated into their own blogs so this one should not be so long. Which is good for me only because I am extremely tired.. this week really wore me out!

Well as you know little Mia is growing her first teeth! I noticed one big one for the first time this week and everyday it seems to be getting bigger and bigger. Even her Auntie Lauren got to see it! It should be popping out soon now since you can already see the outline. As exciting as this may be, it doesn't come without some heart ache. Little Mia is in constant pain due to this little tooth so we are constantly soothing her and I am always putting baby orajel in her mouth which seems to help a lot! Soon she will lose her cute little gumy smile and will have that little brand new tooth to show off!

She is constantly rolling over now and I can never keep her on her back every long. However, she also hates being on her tummy long so most of my time is spent rolling her back on her back as she rolled back on to her tummy and cries. Its still amusing since I know this stage will be short lived and be replaced with her crawling and me chasing! So as long as she can still stay put its fine by me! She has only rolled over completely back to her back a couple of times but it is rare and I often times find her sleeping on her side or tummy in bed now which really aggravates her when she wakes up.. like if "I"did it to her haha. Aye.. Little Mia girl what am I going to do with you!

She still goes nuts in her jump-a-roo and is finally getting the hang of the toys. I only have to show her once how to use certain toys and as smart as she is, she picks up how to do it herself right away. Especially the spinning rattly ones. She is almost at the point where she can fully touch the ground and won’t need that little extra cushion (a blanky I made for her while I was pregnant) to help her. Whenever she goes nuts she reminds me of a ballerina or a tap dancer the way her feet and legs go nuts! Its really cute to watch!

We had our little Thanksgiving this week along with the big official family one. Both went very well and we had a great time. I will have to upload the pictures as soon as I can.

Another big thing is we finally switched formulas with her, due to her throwing up so much. Since she has always been on Similac we decided to keep it in that family and switched her to soy. The throwing up has stopped but so has her pooping! Uh-oh. It took her 3 days (which she usually goes everyday) before she managed to push out a rasin sized rock hard nugget. Poor baby! Yep she’s constipated. We have been keeping an eye out on her and she is still laying her tiny little nuggets which isn't good. She never poops like that so it is a bit concerning but after talking to my Sis in law (mother of 3) and my dad; they have put my mind at ease and say that she should be getting back to her mushy normal self soon once her tiny body fully adjusts to the change. So far she’s still a nugget layer and we switched her formula on Tuesday. I am only going to give it till Monday before I contact her Doc and let him know what’s going on.. if she’s still laying tiny nuggets here and there. She doesn't seem in to much pain, only when she goes.. and her stomach is still soft to the touch so it hasn't gotten to bad yet. I will have to keep you updated on how that is going. My poor little Mc Nugget layer.

Oh and I almost forgot to mention that she slept her first full night on Wednesday! She didn't even wake up for her usual 4am feeding, and since Mama was knocked out for once I didn't wake her up. She went to bed a little before 8pm and slept all the way till 9 the next morning!!!! What a sleeper! We usually don't let her go that long since her tiny little body needs its food during the night and we don't like her sitting in her dirty diaper that long but that day was an exception. Mostly because Mama was extremely tired and didn't wake up herself haha. And Daddy was at work all night in San Diego. But I thought I would mention that little milestone!

That’s about it, she is growing so much and changing so fast I can hardly keep up! Every day is a joy to spend with her and everyday I thank God for the time I get to spend with her...I know one day (most likely in Jan.) I will have to go back to work so I cherish these times and really live everyday to the fullest with her. My little baby girl, I love her so much!

Mia’s Fist Gobble Gobble Day!!!!

Current mood: exhausted
Phew, what a day! …. Errr… better yet.. what a week!!!! I am going to separate her weekly update from her Thanksgiving blog since I imagine both are going to be so long. So here is all about her first Thanksgiving! And first trip to Oxnard!!!!

Since it was my year to spend Thanksgiving with my family in Oxnard, Adrian and I have been preparing both mentally and watching the baby to see how she responds to car rides. She has taken a couple of trips to San Diego and a few around town. Every trip she seems to be getting better and better so our confidence level was really high that this epic Oxnard trip will go well.

Well the big day came, and off we went to Oxnard. This year, Thanksgiving would be held at my brother and sis in laws house (also in Oxnard). This was great especially for the fact that my youngest niece (April) is a little under two and so still has all her baby things around for little cousin Mia to borrow. Plus she also had big cousins Tracy and Sarah to watch over her. So we packed the car up to the max.. it looked like we would be staying for a month with all the stuff we had packed. (As you can probably tell it was ME who packed.. I am notorious for over packing… hey I just want to be prepared for everything and anything!) Our plans were only to stay the night, and leave semi early the next day since Adrian had to go into work. So before we loaded up the car I made sure everything on my check list was checked off so I wouldn't forget anything. The list literally had over 30 things on it.. .and that was just for the baby alone! Once we were all packed up we were off on our little adventure. Mia was doing great… no fussiness and she even fell asleep on the road once we hit the 15 freeway! (about 15mins from the house) She didn't wake up again still we were in Pasadena on the 210 freeway… a good hour from the house. After she woke up she was still doing good, just checking things out and looking around. She amused herself with some of her toys for a long while then she began to get a little whiny. We figured it was a good time to pull off and feed her, change her, and let her stretch her tiny legs. Not knowing the area to well, we decided errr… Adrian decided to pull off in Reseda (hometown of the Karate Kid haha) I wanted to exit DeSoto since I was a tiny bit familiar with the area since I bought my Wedding dress in Woodland hills, but since Adrian the driver he got to pick.. so off we exited on Reseda. BIG MISTAKE! There was nothing but houses and house and more houses. We couldn't find a gas station anywhere or even a store at that! The baby started really getting fussy but we had traveled to far to turn around and get back on the freeway! FINALLY we found a Chevron Gas Station and pulled off. Since the trunk was over packed we had no place to change poor little Mia girl. So I scoped out the restrooms but they didn't have a baby changing table..grrrr!!! So I set up a make shift changing place in the back seat of my car. Mia got a kick out of this and started smiling and singing like crazy. I got her all situated and busted out a bottle and we fed her. Everything went well, and we were still doing good on time, and soon were back on the freeway. It wasn't until it started to get dark that Mia started getting a little whiny and fussy. She hates the dark and is never in it. She always sleeps with the nightlight and when dark fall hits, all the lights in the house go on. So she was scared.. poor thing, but by then were already in Simi Valley and close to our destination. She eventually fell asleep again around the Moorpark area and we made it to my Bro's house just as she woke up.

When we got there were greeted by all her excited little cousins and Auntie Lauren. It was so awesome to see them all together and to be around family again. My bro soon came out and they all got to see the baby as Adrian and I unloaded the car. Soon my Grandpa Pizano showed up and got to meet his baby great granddaughter for the first time! He kept complimenting how pretty she was and how beautiful she was and just couldn't get over her. I took her back to Baby Cousin April's room and got Mia all dolled up in her new fancy poofy dress and dress shows for pictures. Unfortunately her little tights had feet holes in them (they were bought like that… never saw that before) so Cousin April let her borrow hers (cute huh?!) so once she was all ready all the cousins got together for a photo op! Soon my brother carried out the Turkey and Sis in Law Lauren set the table BEAUTIFULLY! It was so festive and really gave it that homey mood. (I wish I had that kind of talent) So off for Turkey pics! We took pics with the Turkey and it almost time to dig right in. My Mom and Dad showed up with even more food and we all got to finally dig in for some good eats! Alas… another Mother moment hit. Mia didn't like her dress and due to it being not of 100% cotton it was irrigating her delicate skin. I didn't want her to break out in more eczema so before I could eat I whisked her off to get her changed into something more comfortable… what could be more comfy than her Chicky Jammies!!! So I got her all set up and Adrian took her over so I could eat. It was already past her bedtime so she was really tired and couldn't be left alone to play. After I was done eating I took the baby back. THANK GOODNESS! Again, that Baby Cousin April had so much to share with Mia… especially her play pen. So Auntie Lauren and I set up April's play pen for Mia in their spare room and I busted out all her night time things.. ie. Her night time dolly she sleeps with, her favorite toy (little green alien), her binky, her night light, her favorite teething toy and her special blankeys, and her boom box with her fav. CD. I laid her down, and Lauren set up the baby monitor and off to dream land Mia went. At first she kept playing but eventually quieted down and fell asleep. YAY! Mia's first Thanksgiving was a success!!! Unfortunately by the time I got Mia all situated for bed, dinner was over and my Grandpa had to go. I didn't get to visit much but promised I would make it up later. Then Mia's Grandpa and Grandma Pizano also had to leave. They each took a little special time to sneak into the baby's room and say goodnight to her. Mia did wake up a few times but with nothing but smiles and kicks and went back to sleep. Once the family left, I threw on my own Jammies while Adrian (a computer tech 24/7) decided to dive into my bro's computer (which Adrian build himself about 4 years ago as a wedding present) take it apart in attempts to find out what was wrong with it. (They had been having problems with it for awhile). So, during this time Lauren, my Bro, Adrian and I all got to do some catching up. It was great… especially since I rarely get to see them as much as I want to. I finally started tuckering out and at about 1am we all decided to hit the sack. Tracy and Sarah graciously gave up their comfy beds so that Adrian and I could sleep in them while they got to sleep in Mommy and Daddys bed!! It was cute, sleeping in their pink room with all these fairy and princess stuff all around. I felt like a little kid again and all those grown up worries melted away as I laid in princess printed sheets surrounded by thousands of stuffed animals… oh and not to mention the cutest kitty in the world "Gus" aka "Guss Guss" who literally curled up on my arm and slept with me till Adrian went to bed. Then slept at the foot of his bed the rest of the night. At about 7 I woke up and I knew the baby would be awake soon and I wanted to be up and fully awake for her incase she woke up scared since for the very first time in her tiny little life (other than the hospital) she slept somewhere else besides home! Oh I almost forgot to mention… right before we went to bed Mia woke up! She was hungry needed to be changed so Adrian took care of her while I got some much needed rest.. what a saint!

When 7:30 rolled around I snuck over to her room next door, slowly creaked opened the door and peeked inside. I was expecting to find her knocked out since I didn't hear a peep out of her on the monitor but to my surprise I found her playing with her dolly quietly. When she saw me she gave me the biggest smile!!!! And started going nuts! It was really cute! I got her up and she quickly noticed she wasn't home. We have a routine in the morning, I always walk her to her window, open the blinds and we greet Mr. Sun together.. then walk over to her pictures on the walls and saw hi to "herself" then take her downstairs. This time since she wasn't home we couldn't do that and I think she noticed. She kept looking around like "where am I?!?!" but she was good about it. I think she was happy just to see Mama. So we went to the living room as everyone else in the house snoozed away. I fixed her breakfast and we watched TV and played on the playmate till she was greet with her Cousins and Auntie! It was a great day.. not only was I able to see my darling little nieces again and play with them… but also got to catch up with my Bro and Sis which was a real treat. We all chowed down on left over’s and just had a good time. They really got to spend some quality time with little Mia and she was on her best behavior. She even took a nap without a fuss! My bro got to feed her a couple of times and she even attempted to spit up all over him, but Mama was there to quickly wip out a burpie cloth and catch it! (I am getting to good at this haha it wasn't easy but came with tons of practice!) Both Lauren and my Bro got a kick out of Mia, and for a while there seemed like we traded kids! As I spent time with my nieces bonding with them, they got to bond with little Mia. She only had 1 meltdown and it was because she went down for her second nap of the day, rolled over, and got stuck on her tummy. This panicked her so it was Mama to the rescue. Soon I got her calmed down but she never did take that nap till Auntie Lauren took her and worked her magic on her. Before we knew it, she was fast asleep.. more like knocked out! In Laurens arms. She looked so happy and peaceful laying there all wrapped up and arms spread out. It was too cute! Anyways, soon it was time to head back home so we loaded up the car, said our hard to say byes and on the road we went.. again.

We figured since she was so good on the way there that it would a cinch to get back home… WRONG! Since we left a little later than planned (We were just having to much of a good time) it got dark quickly and once night hit Mia was scared and cried most of the way home. We ended up making 3 stops (1 for a pee pee diaper, 1 for a poopie, and 1 for a meltdown/diaper change) along the way. Our usual 2 hour trip turned into almost a 4 hour trip (no we didn't hit any traffic) it was because of those stops. She only slept a tiny bit in the car and was awake most of the ride crying. She only really calmed down when I (who sat in the back with her) talked to her and sang her favorite little "Ducky" song (which I literally had to sing over and over and over 100 times!) Soon she finally fell asleep but of course only when there was only about 20 mins left in our trip! Once we reached home she woke up and was still a little grumpy. It was a little past her bedtime but I decided to attempt to get her back into her routine and gave her a bath anyways to help her relax. It really seemed to work too because she went totally NUTS in the bath! She splashed like she never splashed before. I guess from being all cramped in her car seat for that long, it felt good to kick again. So she hit and kicked the water all over, smiling the whole time! I let her stay in her tub playing till the water started getting to cold for my liking then out of the tub she went. I got her ready to for bed, fed her dinner and whisked her away to her bed. It seemed like she knew it was her bed because she got soooo excited once I laid her down. She began singing and kicking and smiling so big. I kissed her goodnight and off to dream land she went….

Phew we did it!! Her first official holiday! AND first time to Oxnard! Adrian and I are extremely worn out now and I am off to bed once I get this all posted. Unfortunately, Adrian has to work tonight but gets to work from home so that will help a little. He doesn't get off till 5am. I will try to spoil him extra tomorrow for being so wonderful and for all he does for me and the little one. Well that's about it! Overall it was a great holiday and I am looking forward for the many new ones to come! Gobble Gobble!!

Teething, tears, and Turkey!

Current mood: exhausted

I usually write at the end of the week about Mia's progress but since I think I will be a bit busy, what with Turkey Day and being out of town, I thought I would get a jump on some new things that happened so far this week.

Unfortunately the time has officially come. As months of prep work, Mia is officially teething. Sunday the 23rd she had her first real pain attack. She was fine at first but towards mid-day she became really fussy. I attempted to put her down for a nap but she wanted nothing to do with that and cried. I thought maybe it was her teeth so I grabbed some of her baby orajel and rubbed her gums with it. She had a tiny bump on her lower canine from before (about a month ago) but it was still tiny. Then I rubbed some up top and found the culprit! There was a HUGE! tooth bump on her upper left hand side canine. When I touched it she squirmed so I know it was bothering her, plus when I turned on the light to get a better look it was all red and inflamed. So I figured the orajel would help... WRONG! she still cried out. So finally I gave in and pulled her out of her crib and decided to try to get her to sleep on me (which is a rare treat) just so she could get her much needed rest. Thats when it hit! She began to scream and cry like I have never heard her do since she was a tiny newborn. I did everything I could for her, walked her around, cuddled her, rocked her, played with her, talked to her, nothing worked she just melted down. Finally I managed to get her to fall asleep in my arms and I thought, phew finally she will get some rest and wake up better. WRONG! a little less than an hour later she woke up and she was screaming and crying again. This time Adrian was up (she had woke him up earlier from her melt down) and he tried to console her. He did all the things I tried but she just got worse. Then I looked at her and she had her first real tears come out and roll down her cheeks! This broke my heart and I started tearing up. There was nothing we could do, this little one didn't feel good at all! More tears came out and I finally couldn't stand it, the mother instinct couldn't be held back anymore, I took her from Adrian and walked her around the house talking to her. She would calm down for a bit then let out this shriek and scream and cry again. Then I took her to the rocking chair and finally was able to calm her down by talking to her and holding her. She began to feel better and was manageable for a bit then it hit again and she started screaming and crying. So I decided since it was already getting late to give her an early bath and put her to bed early. When I put her in her bath, which is LOVES, she didn't even enjoy it. She just sat there all sad. She never kicked (a first) and her little legs just floated there. I gave her some of her bath toys but she didn't want them. So I cleaned her up and took her out, got her ready for bed and gave her dinner. I laid her down and she seemed to be ok, but 15mins later she started screaming again. I went upstairs and rubbed some more orajel on her gums and that seemed to do the trick, she went right to sleep and didn't move for 10 hours . By her night time feeding at 4am she was much better and like her old self. This was reassuring and by morning she was great. Well here we go... its officially teething time!

Well yesterday, we decided to have our little family T-day. (We have them early since we spend the real T-Days with family and would have no time for our own). Luckily the baby was great in the morning and allowed me to cook. I cooked our turkey (which I usually do, this was my 4-5 turkey), stuffing (My Grandma Pizano's recipe), mashed potatoes, corn and bisquets. We had pumpkin pie too! So once everything was done I woke up Adrian so he could watch the baby for me while I prep'd the table. I asked him to dress her in her dress for me and I later found them struggling on the couch... hahah... it was really cute. Adrian doesn't dress the baby much so it was quite amusing to see him trying to get a dress on Mia. First he put it on without its undershirt part so had to take it off, then he put the undershirt part on backwards and had to take it off, then he put it all on but couldn't find the buttons. Soon he had Mia across his knees in the super baby position trying to button it, it was too funny. Anyways she was all set to go, I had to attempt to calm down her happy hair and put a bow in and her turkey bib then it was picture time. It was funny trying to get the camera timer to work so we could get a family picture together, and trying to take Mia's turkey pictures. She even decided to kick the turkey because Mama held her too close to it. It was a funny disaster but well worth it. So it was time to eat and put Mia to play with her things. So after prepping everything, cooking the Turkey for 10 hours and all the hard work I put in to make this meal it was FINALLY time to eat! As soon as we started to chow down, Mia had other plans and decided she did not want to be left alone and play and started crying. So welcome Motherhood, there I was after all that work I was up and down with Mia every 2 mins and my food got cold. But at least I got a few bites of hot food haha. Don't think Adrian didn't help out, he was up and down with her as well so we both had cold food. Aye little Mia Girl! So after dinner, I held the baby and she fell asleep for her nap. With the mix of being up early with the baby and Turkey AND having such a rough teething day before AND having just eaten turkey I was so exhausted. All I wanted to do was lay down but the little one was in my arms so I couldn't put her down (she wakes up) she needed a nap bad. So I waited and about 45mins later she woke up and Adrian took her over so I could get some well earned rest. I woke up about 2 hours later and off for more Mama duties I went. The rest of the night went pretty uneventful and she went down to bed pretty easy. Phew... what a day! Our first official Family Turkey day!! Awww...

Well today is going pretty well. She is down for a nap so I am trying to run around and get some stuff done and prep for our big trip this Thursday when we attempt to make it all the way to Oxnard for Thanksgiving! We will see how that goes. I am sure I will write more when I can. Gobble Gobble!!!!

Week 19... her last "teen" week!

Current mood: awake

Here we are, another week older and more to report. Just when I think things will finally quiet down and nothing new will happen to write about at the end of the week, BAM Mia decides to do something to surprise us all!!!

The week started off really well. She took her longest afternoon nap ever! By herself in her crib that is (which is hard to do since she’s a notorious cat napper and hates sleeping alone during the day). She slept for 4 hours one day! I was worried she wouldn't go to sleep at night since she woke up at 9am and went down for that epic nap at around 11 and didn’t get up till 3! but we had no trouble. She still got sleepy at her usual bedtime and off to dreamland she went without a fuss. I guess she is going through another growth spurt, especially for her to sleep that much. She was knocked out too, I even took pics of her with the flash and she didn't even flinch! haha My little sleeping beauty!

The HUGE!!! thing that happened this week was she finally learned how to roll over unassisted on the floor!!! She had been practicing and practicing till finally she got it! Of course it was when Adrian and I were crossing paths and just happened to not be watching her! Literally no more than a min. Now she does it all the time, I can't get her to stop! Whenever I lay her on the floor on her play mat the first thing she does and roll onto her belly. She gets all excited and plays then decides she hates it and cries so I have to go over there and roll her back, then a second later there she goes again, back to her tummy and cries! Aye Mia Girl! Haha I don't mind though, I have fun every min. with her. However, yesterday she actually was able to roll back to her back again!!! She only did this a couple of times and I have yet to see her do it again, soon she will be rolling all around! Just like her Mama at that age (I wasn't a crawler I was a roller so I've been told). Yesterday she was also attempting to move her legs in a crawling motion! She managed to push herself on her play mat, but she hasn't mastered her arms yet so its more of belly slide at this point haha. My little one will be crawling in no time! She’s also rolling over in her crib and I often find her on her side when sleeping or belly. It’s very cute to see and unfortunately she is such a light sleeper I can't take pictures. The cutest time I think was the time I found her on her side cuddling her little pink dolly and sleeping.

Another big thing that happened is she is finally no longer using the newborn hammock in her bathtub during baths anymore. I kept using it though she was to big for it because the last time I attempted to not use it while bathing her and she had a big fit! She demanded to lay down when she was bathed haha. Now that she is bigger and more active and has found the art of splashing! and doesn't like laying down since she can't splash as well. So I finally retired that old hammock and she loves her bathes even more. The little tub she uses forces her to sit up so she has more leg room to kick and splash and boy does she. I end up drenched more than ever now but I don't mind, just seeing her play, smile, scream and laugh while splashing water all over is so worth it. She is still a kicking machine!

Speaking of kicking machine, now in the morning I can hear her kicking her bed crib like crazy. I am always awaken by THUMP THUMP TUMP while she plays in her crib. I can even hear it from downstairs!

She still loves her feet and I am constantly trying to pull her big toe out of her mouth but she always manages to find it again. Its really cute and I have taken a lot of pictures and videos of that to show her one day.

She also gets so excited she hyper ventilates now! I have no idea why she does that but she doesn't seem to be bothered by it.

Some update on her eczema problem. Well earlier this week it got BAD! poor thing had it all over her face, her forehead, cheeks, nose, and above her eyes. I finally contacted her doctor again and he advised me it would be ok to use cortisone on her face but only for 3 days at a time since it thins out the skin and can cause a white discoloration. Luckily I haven't needed to use it yet since the flare up has finally calmed down with the use of more aquafour lotion and not allowing her to lay on anything but 100% cotton things. I switched out all her blankeys to only the 100% cotton ones and that seems to be helping a ton! (I read somewhere that cotton is the best thing to use) Unfortunately there is no cure for her eczema (she inherited it from me.. but I have been in remission since I was about 10 years old) and she will continue to have outbreaks until her teens. So the best thing is preventive action for flare ups and so far I think I have found a good combo for her. Cotton and lotion, humidifier and more breast milk (I read it helps) and it seems to be doing the trick. She still has tiny flare ups here and there but the aquafour seems to be helping. I will keep you updated on that. Oh and her feet flared up again and I ended up needing the cortisone on them and now the flare up is gone but her feet are all discolored. Hopefully it will get better and back to normal soon. I will keep you updated on her progress.

Well Thanksgiving is just around the corner (next week to be exact) and two big things will be happening. It will be her first trip to Oxnard and her first time meeting her Great Grandpa Pizano. We are all looking forward to that. It will be held at my Brother and Sister-in-laws house so it will be great to see all the little cousins together! I just hope the drive to Oxnard will agree with Mia.... it’s her first big trip! (almost 3 hours away!) I will be writing about that soon. However, Adrian, Mia and I will be having our own little Cardoso Family Thanksgiving here at home either this weekend or Wednesday. We already got the turkey it’s a tiny 12 pounder and I realized, wow little Mia weighs more than the turkey!! Haha I will take tons of pictures I am sure and will be posting them like always. Due to the fact our families both live about 200 miles apart (Cardoso in San Diego and Pizano in Oxnard) it’s nearly impossible to have any little "Cardoso" (the three of us) family parties on the actual holidays themselves so we usually celebrate a day or two early. This has been happening for years now between Adrian and I so I expect to continue to do so, and it doesn't bother me I don't mind. Its more about together-ness than the actually physical day in my opinion. Anyways, Mia is calling me and its off for more Mama duties!

Joys of Fatherhood! haha tables turned!

Current mood: amused

Finally Mia decided to give her Daddy a run for his money. Something too funny happened last night that I decided to write a quick blog about it.

After putting the baby to bed last night, I was really tired. Since Adrian had the day off he offered to take care of the baby for her 4am feeding to give me a break. Of course I jumped at the chance to get a little extra sleep. So around 4am this is what happened according to Adrian and from what I saw.

He said when 4am rolled around and the baby was still knocked out, he decided to wake her up so he could feed her and then go to bed himself. He said she refused to wake up, he made noise, flushed the toilet (the bathroom is next to her room and is really loud), and even started changing her diaper. She just laid there all knocked out and barely moved.. then finally she decided to wake up and she was all smiles and talking like she always is. He changed her and prep'd her bottle. When he shook it to mix it, I woke up a little, then decided to stay in bed and drift back to sleep. Then I heard this HUGE rumble.. I recognized it right away being a California resident all my life.. yep EARTHQUAKE! I waited and sure enough here comes the shaking (it was really small though only a 4.6 or something like that) After it was done I got up to check on Adrian and the baby. He was feeding her on the chase upstairs next to the maste rbedroom. He said he heard and felt it too. The baby was sitting there happily eating. After seeing everything was fine, I decided to go back to bed and try to get that extra sleep I was promised haha. As soon as I climbed into bed I heard "Oh NO MIA!!! She’s throwing up!!!!" I jumped up "Do you have a burpie cloth?" "No!!" So I grabbed one that was in the bedroom and ran out to him but too late, he already started using my folded clean sheets I had on the chase waiting to be put away! Sigh.. haha She got it all over her jammies so she needed new ones. I couldn't just leave him there like that so I was on my way downstairs to grab some new clean jammies that were folded on the couch in the living room. As I was walking downstairs I heard a HUGE fart! and Adrian in a panic voice "Oh No Mia I think you went poopies!!! OMG that is such a nasty wet fart" I laughed and just told him to bring the baby downstairs so we could use her changing table and take care of her diaper and jammies in one shot. He brought her down, I went to the couch, grabbed her jammies and heard "Oh NOOO shes throwing up again!!!!" so I ran over and gave him a burpie cloth. Mia was all proud of herself and was talking and smiling. She thought it was the funniest thing. We cleaned her up and Adrian started to change her diaper. No poopies.. phew.. however half way through getting the new diaper on I noticed he took it off again and was examining it. I asked "what are you doing?", "I think she went pee pee can you tell?!" of course, leave it to Mama who changes 90% of her diapers and is a real expert I could tell just from feeling it that she was wet. It was unusually warm haha. So there went her new diaper (fasteners still unused) into the trash and on came a new one. It was funny watching Adrian struggle with trying to put her new jammies on. Finally she was all clean and dry and upstairs she went, and she was put to bed. I climbed into bed myself.. still attempting to capture some extra sleep but Mia had another plans. Due to all the ruckus she was wide awake and didn't want to be in bed. So there went Adrian doing what I do all the time, try to convince the little one to go to bed! Eventually about a good 45 mins I no longer heard the baby and Adrian finally was able to go to bed. Phew.. what a night. I found this all very amusing since Mia is always giving me a run for my money and this time Adrian finally got a dose of it! YAY! haha Joys of Fatherhood!

**** UPDATE***

This morning at around 9:30 I was nursing the baby on the couch. Things were going good. Adrian was in bed trying to catch up on some lost sleep when... rumble rumble rumble.. Uh-oh... yep another Earthquake rumbled through the house. It was also small and turned out to only be a 3.8 and was in the exact same spot as the 4am one (15 mins from Temecula). So I waited till Mia was done and we both went upstairs to check on Adrian who was awake. I asked him if he felt it and he said "Yea it shook the bed all over and woke me up, not to mention the cat flipping out, clawed the heck outta me and the bed and ran under it to hide" Haha poor guy! Well all is going good now. Adrian is finally back to sleep and little Mia is playing in her Jump-a-roo. Soon it will be her nap time and I think I will join her. What start to a day! haha

Rockin and Rolling!

Current mood: excited

SHE DID IT!!! She FINALLY rolled over all by herself on the floor! After trying and trying, last night she finally managed to roll over, however, her arm (though she finally did get it from under her) was still pinned to her side and she cried.

Then today she started trying again and again. Talk about a determined baby! Then it happened and of course Mama and Daddy missed it. She just had to wait for that exact moment where we had our eyes off of her.

What happened was this, she was laying on her mat on the floor and watching the football game with Daddy. (Yes, the Chargers lost...) I was cooking Caldio de Papa and was just about done. We needed some cheese so Adrian had to run off to the store, but he needed to shower first. So he asked me to watch the baby while he ran upstairs. So I covered my soup, lowered the flame and walked over to the living room to check on the baby and she was on her tummy!!!!! I was like "Oh my gosh oh my gosh Baby you did it!!" She looked up at me and smiled, screamed and was so happy and proud of herself. She was fully on her tummy and supporting herself with her hands. So I ran and grabbed the camera to take a couple of pictures, then she started crying. I picked her up, all excited and encouraging and celebrating but she kept crying. Then I noticed the smell.... yea she had a present for me in her diaper.. poopies!!!! No wonder why she didn't want to stay on her back haha. So I changed her cleaned her all up. Shared the story with Adrian then put her back on her mat and sure enough, she got the knack of it because she kept doing it over and over. However, she doesn't know how to get back so she starts crying and I have to roll her back on her back. She seems to get a kick out of rolling over though its really cute. I even uploaded a quick video of it. Anyways, its time for me to get her bath ready. I just had to share the story!!!

Week number 18!

Current mood: happy

Little Mia is officially 18 weeks now. I still find each week she gets older, harder and harder to believe. She is changing so much so fast. I have a little picture frame in her room that has a space for 1 picture every month and when I look at it, I am amazed at what I am looking at. I hardly even recognize the earlier pictures... my little one is growing up!!!

Well since she turned 4 months a few days ago and I wrote a epic blog on that, I really don't have to much more to report. I guess I can give some updates.

Her eczema has unfortunately gotten a little bit worse. I managed to cure the spot on her forehead but then it started to spread to the other side. I started working on that then it would spread to her nose, then cheek. It felt like every day she woke up it was in a new place and the old place was cured. It was almost like I was chasing it all around her face. There is a bright side though, today was the first day she woke up with NONE! YAY!!! And the two big patches on her feet, which were really inflamed, are about 90% gone too! YAY! I hope this celebration isn't pre-mature, but I will be keeping a close eye on her. I just feel so bad that every night after her bath she ends up with 4 different creams and lotions on. I use the aquafour on her face and arms, cortisone for her feet, johnson and johnson's bedtime lotion for her body, and A&D for her little bootie buns (to prevent diaper rash which she has yet to experience). Hopefully this will all be temporary.

As for her possible reaction to her recently shots, she never got any! YAY! She never had a fever, never got unusually fussy, or lethargic. What a trooper! We didn't even need to give her Tylenol at all. The only thing she got was a tiny bruise at one injection sight but other than that there is nothing wrong. I just hope her next round in Jan. we are lucky again.

One big thing that happened this week is she has officially retired her binky! Yep she hung it up haha. I have tried to give it to her at night (she only really used it to help her sleep) but she just spits it out and goes to sleep on her own without it. She never needs it during the day or her daytime naps. The big test is the car, when I take her out on my own she doesn’t need it but when we go places as family she takes it to help her fall asleep. I am torn about this, I mean the binky did makes things easier when putting her to sleep but if she doesn't want it I can't force her.. just another sign of her growing up.

Her teeth have been bothering her more and more at night I have noticed. So she isn't getting the straight rest she used to. She doesn’t wake up fully but she whines a lot out of nowhere and cries out. When I go to check on her she is usually asleep with her fingers in her mouth. Guess it’s time to make more of an effort to give her more baby orajel at night, though she hates it and cries when I try to give it to her. She is however, using her teething rings more and has learned to reach out and grab them when she wants them. She bites on them, takes them out and looks at them, then bites down on them again. Its really cute to watch her. Well that’s about it for this week. I am sure by next week I will be writing a lot more on new things she’s doing

She’s 4 Months old Today!

Current mood: blissful

That’s right! 4 months today and changing so much. When I look back on this past month I can't believe all that she has done. It seems like I end up writing more and more each week and month just to attempt to cover it all. I started writing about her way back when I found out I was pregnant. Each blog entry wasn't too long but ever since I had her and continued to write... each blog seems to be getting longer and longer. I don't mind doing it though, since I know I will really appreciate all the effort I am doing now, many years down the road when Mia is all grown up. Hopefully she will appreciate it too.

Ok with that being said here are some highlights of the past month. I will not go into to much detail since most of her weekly updates contain most of these things.

Well we have been taking her out more and more. I love when all three of us go on a little outing and with her tagging along it just brightens up the whole experience. I have never loved grocery shopping as much as I do now when little Mia comes with us. I love how she just looks around and studies her new environment. (I use the word studies because if you saw her, you would know, she gets so serious and just looks at everything so intense!) Just recently has she become more comfortable and actually smiles in her stroller now. I also think she has finally associated the car seat with going out. Whenever she’s in there she gets so excited. She is doing much better in the car, in fact she hasn't cried in the car in a very long time. I think not since her trip to San Diego for the first time back in early Sept. I even got brave enough to take her out alone with me. We went to Babies R Us a couple of times and we both had a blast. She did great, considering she never had to sit in the back seat alone before. She even fell asleep without her binky which is shocking!

This past month she was also dressed up more than ever before. I am not talking about clothes, but costumes! I went NUTS! to say the least. With Halloween being this past month.. there was never a short supply of new costumes to put little Mia in. She seemed to like them all but the most special one... the one her Grandparents Pizano bought for her, for Halloween. It was the most adorable little fuzzy rabbit costume! but she would have no part of it. Every time we would dress her in that she would freak out and scream. She even threw up on it a couple of times.. I am thinking it was her plan to mess it up so we wouldn’t put it back on her again haha.
She also visited her first Pumpkin Patch this month! I love that place, since I have always been obsessed with little pumpkins. (I even had them decorate my wedding reception with little tiny pumpkins!) So it was an extra special treat to have Mia there. She even got to pick out her very own pumpkin!

Halloween soon came and that was a big day! It’s my favorite time of the year and we got to take her out trick or treating! Unfortunately our neighbors who usually go all out, were all grinches this year so we took her to the mall instead. She dressed up in her little bumble bee costume and she got tons of compliments. Adrian and I had a awesome time showing her off and having fun with her, however, Mia sadly couldn't say the same. She never cried but she never smiled either. Most of her pictures she just looks scared and confused.. poor baby. So we didn't stay there to long but ended up getting 8 pieces of candy!

A new thing she started doing this month was, she learned how to splash in the bathtub! I put her in there, and right way she kicks like crazy. She loves watching her own feet splash around. She looks all intense and serious but when you talk to her she will look up and give the biggest smile, dimples and all! Then splash splash splah! Its really cute, and I don't mind getting a little wet if she’s having a good time. Now I have to factor in some Mia splash time in the tub when I bathe her.

She is getting really good at her hand coordination. She grabbed her first toy by herself this month (her little rattle phone) and even rolled on her side to grab her a little Alien on the changing table. Just recently she started grabbing her little blankeys and pulling them over her face, then takes it away from her face, then pulls it back. Its a new little game she plays with herself. She screams with excitement when she can do it. She also found Mama's long hair and has been pulling it... OUCH! and she has ripped the glasses off Adrian's face a few times too!
She has rolled over a couple of times. The first time on my bed while I was prep'ing her for her bath and the other time on the couch. Once I actually had to physically catch her as she rolled off the couch! Talk about lightening Mama speed! She tried to do it on the floor but her arm gets stuck under her so she can't quite get fully over, but she’s almost there. Tummy time has gotten so much better. She actually likes it now and when she is on her back to long, she demands tummy time. She smiles and screams. Now she’s doing this weird swimming motion on her chest. Almost like the breast-stroke. I am not sure why she’s doing this but she loves moving her arms around, like she’s doing a snow angel on her tummy.

She held her own bottle without assistance this month. She is getting really good at it now. I just show it to her, she reaches out and takes it. She does require some help when she gets sleepy but for the most part she is really doing good. Sometimes she holds its 90% of her feedings!
Grandparents on both sides visited her this month too. Grandparents Pizano came down for a weekend to see her and it was a blast. A few days ago Grandparents Santos came to visit, along with little cousins Natalia and Brianna. She enjoyed the company and was a good baby. Grandpa Santos even played the guitar for her and she loved it. She even got to stroke some of the strings. Cousin Brianna (3yrs) wouldn't leave her side the whole time, all she could say was "I love you Mia" and Mia this and Mia that. It was really cute.

She also found her feet this month! Ever since she discovered them, she is ALWAYS playing with them. Socks or no socks (though she prefers no socks). I even find her sucking her big toe!!! I always take it out of her mouth and there she goes it right back in again. I can't count the number of times I get her in the morning (in her crib) and her little jammie feet are all soaked from her eating them!

She finally learned how to play in her jump-a-roo too! She goes nuts in there. She no longer gets swallowed whole by it, like she did when I first bought it. Now she jumps around and goes nuts. Its the funniest thing to watch her little feet go nuts. Its almost like she’s running place.
A big thing she started doing this month .. and it was long awaited.. she laughs now!!!! Granted its tough to get her to do it, but when she does its soooo CUTE! I can't wait till she starts doing it more consistently.

She is teething more, and even has little tiny red bumps of where I think her first teeth will pop thru. She is constantly drooling (I go thru endless amounts of bibs) and she always has her fingers in her mouth. Most of the time she refuse the binky and prefers her fingers. I am wondering if she will be left handed.. she only really uses her left hand and really only grabs stuff with it too..hmm. I even had to use baby orajel on her a couple of times, and it must taste nasty because she makes the most grossed out faces. Unfortunately due to teething and I believe the need for a formula change, she has been spitting up way more than normal. Before she rarely ever did it, but now it’s all the time. Even hours after she ate. We are planning on switching to soy once her currently formula can is used up. I will have to update you guys on that.
She is also starting to lose her baby hair! NOOOooooooo. I am sad, I love her soft little hair. Oh well, with getting bigger comes that too I guess. She is finally getting her little bald spot on the back of her head, but luckily the hair she does have is long enough to cover it. Her hair is changing as well, it started off really curly and we all thought she took after me, however, recently within the last month it has really straightened out alot and become wavey and poofy so we all know where she got that... yea.. Daddy! haha You should see her in the morning, she already had bed head!

She also went to her first bday party this month. It was for her cousin Brianna's 3rd bday at a park in SD. She did great, never fussed in the car and was a good baby at the park. Everyone got to see her and really enjoy her. It was fun.

Another big event that happened this month was the elections. Granted it had nothing to do with Mia per-se, its a big event because we elected our first African American president! To be born in this historical time is a big thing. Its a start of something new and great and Mia gets to be a part of that.

Now on to not so fun stuff. Doctor's visits. She had two this month. The first one was for this little dry patch I found on her forehead. I was scared it could be eczema and wanted to get it checked out by her doctor since she had a few other patches, one on her wrist and one on her foot. The doctor checked her out and confirmed that he didn't believe it to be eczema (I didn't believe him since I had it as a kid and I recognized it) and gave us some cream to use on it. (Aquafour to be exact). After using it a couple of days her forehead cleared up and so did most of her wrist, however, her foot got worse and spread to her other foot. So a week later was her 4 month check up and shots! So I asked him to look at her again and unfortunately this time he said it was in fact eczema and told me to start using cortisone cream on it. Her feet at least. Her cheeks also started showing signs of it but he recommended I continue to use Aquafour on it and just use the cortisone cream on her feet. Her cheeks are getting better and this morning I noticed her feet are as well. YAY!! So hopefully we can tackle this problem before it gets worse. Ok on to the shots. Yep it was that dreaded time again, she got her second round of shots yesterday and boy did she cry. I hate hearing it because it’s a different kind of cry and one of pain, but I know every baby goes thru it and it’s the best thing for her. I just try to see it as a rite of passage but it doesn't make things any easier that’s for sure. So far she hasn't reacted negatively to the shots. Granted the nurses said she can run a fever any time during the next few days, so we have been keeping an extra close eye on her. So far so good, no fever. I have been nursing her more than ever lately just to boost her up her anti-bodies to help her out. Overall, her check up went great. She has gotten so big, but my concern was, she’s not getting fat. She doesn't have that typical baby belly or rolls yet so I asked the doctor about this. He let us know that her weight is right on target, however, she is above average in height for her age (didn't surprise me since she’s so long.. she wears 9-12 month onesies now!! though she doesnt fill them out its the only ones which will snap at the bottom) and her jammies have to be that size too since her feet get scrunched in anything smaller. Her head is also above average (which accounts for why her beanies never fit her) but I think its because it houses a big brain! Even the doctor says she will be a smart one! haha. He was amazed how alert is she and how she studies all the new things around her, including him! He let us know we can start her on baby rice-cereal next month! I can't believe it, my little one will be eating solids errr.. semi solids soon! ACK!

On to breastfeeding. Yep I am still doing it. For a while there I thought I would have to stop since my supply started dwindling really low. Even when I pumped alot all I would get was 1 oz (and that’s both sides!) She then started refusing to nurse and I think its because of not hardly getting anything and being so hungry. I was almost at my wits end, I really didn't want to stop just yet, but I was getting really depressed about it. Then I decided to give it one last shot, this time I would never take breaks and ALWAYS nurse her at every feeding and supplement her after. I stopped pumping altogether and just let her do it. Ever since then my supply has gone back up and she doesn't mind nursing again, in fact she even falls asleep sometimes haha. Granted I still don't make enough for her so I still supplement her 4 oz after but she seems happy. I am happy with this since it’s such a great bonding experience and I just don't want to give it up just yet.

In Summary:

Feeding: Well due to nursing all the time, I can't really track this like I used to but she does finish 4-5 oz after. When I don't nurse, which is now rare, she can hit 6-7 oz easily. Due to her vomiting lately the doc recommended we cut back to 3-4 after nursing so we don't really feed her that much anymore unless she demands it.

New things: Laughs, uses her jump-a-roo now without assistance, first Mama baby trips out together alone, splashing in the bathtub, losing her hair, Halloween!, grabbing toys, found feet, eczema, first bday party, rolled over, and holding her bottle by herself, oh and attempting to sit up (like little baby crunches its too cute)

Weight: 13.8 lbs (taken 11-10-08)

Goals met from last month?: We hit every goal except one from last month. She doesn't mind longer car rides (we took her to SD without incident and around town), she went to the mall for the first time (to trick or treat), and her day time routine has gotten really good. She even naps alone in her crib for a few hours now which was unheard of a month ago! Due to the weather conditions lately, we haven't been able to meet the goal of walking around outside. Its ok though since I walk her around stores now! YAY!

Goals for next month: Getting her to learn to roll over on the floor, getting her to laugh more consistently, holding her bottle without any assistance at all for a full feeding, and a big one....attempting to take her to Oxnard for the first time (Thanksgiving is this month)

17 weeks already!

Current mood: stoked

This week flew by so fast, I didn't even know it was already Friday till Adrian reminded me! Its just one big blurr to me, but not much really happened, other than Mia being Mia well, now that I think of it.. a few things did happen.

One of the new things she did was, she grabbed her own alien toy all by herself. Her alien usually sits against the wall on her changing table and I usually give it to her if she starts fussing. Its her favorite toy out of all of them so it usually cheers her up if she isn't to happy. This time she decided she didn't want to wait for me to give it to her so she rolled on her side and grabbed it herself and started hugging it! It was soooo cute! Now she does it all the time, I have to practically wrestle it away from her!

Another first time thing she did was we were able to actually take her to two difference stores in one outing! Usually we only go to one place because we don't know how she will act and want to be close to home incase of an unexpected Mia meltdown. However, she has been really good in all the stores we have ever taken her so we decided to try two. So we went to PetCo and WinCo and she did great! I am so excited this means, I can bring her out more and have her out longer! YAY! I can't wait to take her out more, I really enjoy showing her off.

She also had a doctors appointment this week. She recently started getting this dry patch on her forehead, and it started to spread. This concerned me because I thought it could be eczema since I had that as a young kid. So off to the doctor's office we went. As we waited for her doc to see her, she entertained herself by going nuts on the paper on top of the examining table. It was too funny and too cute to see her going nuts and ripping it all up. She did great. they took her weight which is a little over 14 lbs!!!! I knew it was high since she is no longer a little feather but more like a sack of potatoes! Well the doc did finally check her out and reassured us that it isn't eczema but excessively dry skin. He recommended an ointment we could use and he said it should clear up pretty quickly (which is has! YAY) We are due back again this coming Monday when she gets her second round of shots! I am not looking forward to that at all... its the worst thing in the world to see your little one put through that. Makes me cry

Well this week also contained a HUGE American historical event. The first African-American president was elected! So Mia and I watched the elections on TV and we both were happy our candidate won! I even took some pictures of her next to the newspapers front pages. What a time to be born, she is very lucky! I kept those front pages for her baby box so one day she can see that and know this all happened the year she was born.

Let’s see what else... well one of the things I have noticed lately, is she is beginning to lose her little baby hair!! Noooooooo..... she’s growing up to fast. Every day I find more and more little hairs all over her Jammies, blankies, and bed. Though she isn't balding, even Adrian noticed her hair isn't as full as it used to be. I am sure it will grow back soon, but I am sure going to miss that soft little baby hair.

Also, I think its about time we changed her formula. She still doesn't eat a whole lot (usually average 4-5oz depending if I nurse her beforehand or not) but she is throwing up alot more and spitting up all the time. She never used to do that but now its all the time. I go through so many bibs just because of her blowing baby chunks... ew! So we might switch to soy soon, Doc said it would be ok. I will have to write an update on that later.

Well on to something more positive, she learned how to use her jumperoo!!!!! After having it for 3 months she FINALLY learned how to bounce around in it and she loves it! She goes nuts and it’s the cutest thing to watch her little feet go nuts (almost like she’s running in place) as she flies around. I took some videos of it because it was just too cute!

It’s been getting really chilly around here lately and freezing at night. Poor Mia's hands and feet are always frozen in the morning even after wearing the warmest jammies she has! So Adrian, Mia and myself went off to Home Depot and bought her a new floor heater especially for her room. Ever since we've been using it she’s been extra toasty and happy. Even her mid-day naps have lasted longer! She even slept for 3 hours straight in her bed during the day!!! That’s amazing especially since she hates taking naps during the day and it is usually a struggle to get her to stay asleep.

Well that’s about it for now. Now I am off to get her bath ready since it is getting late for her. Ever since this time change, she has started going to bed earlier. She knows its bath time/bedtime when the sunsets and since it usually sets a little around 5 her bedtime has gotten sooner. She still sleeps till 8am (of course she still has her 4-5am feeding) so it’s all good for us!!! Ack she’s starting to fuss... off to do more Mama duties!

Patient Instructions
Aquaphor ointment twice a day to all dry areas1% hydrocortisone cream twice a day to red, itchy areas (use for no more than 3 days at a time on the face or around genitals- can cause discoloration or thinning of the skin)Kaiser Permanente Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)What is eczema? Eczema is an inherited type of sensitive, dry skin. Eczema often starts on the cheeks at 2 to 6 months of age. The rash is most commonly found in the creases of the elbows, wrists, and knees. Occasionally, eczema occurs on the neck, ankles and feet as well. The rash is red and extremely itchy. If scratched, the rash becomes raw and weepy. What is the cause? A personal history of asthma or hay fever or a family history of eczema makes it more likely that your child has eczema. Flareups occur when there is contact with irritating substances (for example, soap or chlorine). In 30% of infants with eczema, certain foods cause the eczema to flare up. If you suspect a particular food item (for example, cow's milk, eggs, or peanut butter) is causing your child's flareups, feed that food to your child one time (a challenge) after avoiding it for 2 weeks. If the food is causing flare-ups, the eczema should become itchy or develop hives within 2 hours of eating the food. If this occurs, avoid ever giving this food to your child and talk to your physician about food substitutes. How long does it last? This is a chronic condition and will usually not go away before adolescence. The goal is control, not cure. The early treatment of any itching can help prevent a severe rash. How can I take care of my child? Steroid creams Steroid creams are the main treatment of the itch of eczema. Most children need 2 types of steroid creams: one preventive cream to treat mild eczema and another stronger cream to stop a flare-up once it has started. Preventive steroid cream: Usually hydrocortisone 1%. Apply this cream 2 times a day to any spot that itches. Also use it for mild flare-ups. After the rash quiets down, use it for an additional week. When you travel with your child, always take the steroid cream with you. If it starts to run out, buy some more or get the prescription refilled. Rescue steroid creams are sometimes needed. They are usually a stronger steroid cream. Never apply this more powerful steroid cream to the face. Hydrating the skin Hydration of the skin followed by lubricating cream is the main way to prevent flare-ups of eczema. Your child should have one bath a day for 10 minutes. Water-soaked skin is far less itchy, but it must be covered by a lubricating cream within 3 minutes of getting out of the bath. Eczema is very sensitive to soaps, especially bubble bath. Young children can usually be cleaned without any soaps. Teenagers need a soap to wash under the arms, the genital area, and the feet. They can use a nondrying soap such as Dove for these areas. Keep shampoo off the eczema. Lubricating cream Apply a lubricating cream once daily (twice a day during the winter) every day. Some lubricating creams are Keri, Lubriderm, Nivea, and Nutraderm. Children with eczema always have dry skin. After a 10-minute bath, the skin is hydrated and feels good. Help trap the moisture in the skin by applying an outer layer of lubricating cream to the entire skin surface while it is damp (within 3 minutes of leaving the bath). Apply it after you have put steroid cream on any itchy areas. Avoid applying any ointments, petroleum jelly, or vegetable shortening because they can block the sweat glands, increase the itching, and worsen the rash (especially in warm weather). Also, soap is needed to wash them off. For severe eczema, ointments may be needed temporarily to heal the skin. Itching At the first sign of any itching, apply the preventive steroid cream to the area that itches. Keep your child's fingernails cut short. Also, wash your child's hands with water frequently to avoid infecting the eczema. Antihistimine Medicine An antihistamine may be needed at bedtime for itching that is keeping your child from getting to sleep or causes your child to wake up during the night. What can be done to prevent eczema? Wool fibers and clothes made of other scratchy, rough materials make eczema worse. Cotton clothes should be worn as much as possible. Avoid triggers that cause eczema to flare up, such as excessive heat, sweating, excessive cold, dry air (use a humidifier), chlorine, harsh chemicals, and soaps. Never use bubble bath. Also, keep your child off the grass during grass pollen season (May and June). Keep your child away from anyone with fever blisters since the herpesvirus can cause a serious skin infection in children with eczema. Try to breast-feed all high-risk infants. Otherwise, use a soy formula. Also try to avoid cow's milk products, soy, eggs, peanut butter, wheat, and fish during your infant's first year. When should I call my child's health care provider?
