Current mood: worried
Well it was bound to happen eventually... yep Mia is officially sick with her first fever. We have been EXTREMELY fortunate that since Mia was born she has only been sick once (last winter) and that was just a head cold. We have never experienced a fever before... poor baby. She still has a slight temp. now but nothing like earlier. Here is how today went....
I was woken up early in the morning by a snoring bear in my bed! Yes I am talking about Adrian. He usually NEVER snores... but today he was and it was BAD! I couldn't take it anymore, so I woke him up and made him sleep on his side. He told me that he had caught a cold last night and his nose was all stuffed up. (Explains the snore) I stayed away from him as much as I could and tried to go back to sleep. Sure enough the snore returned. I couldn't get any sleep so I decided to get up and just start my day early.
At around 9 I heard Mia stirring in her crib. She wasn't jibber jabbering like she normally does but I knew she was awake. When I walked into her room she was just laying there. Usually she pops right up at the sight of me, but this time it took her alittle longer to come around. I picked her up and rocked her in the rocking chair a bit so she could clear her head. I usually do this when she wakes up groggy like that. Normally it takes a few mins. before she perks up, picks up her head and jibber jabbers to me letting me know she is ready to start the day. That didn't happen this time. I found that extremely odd. She just laid there on my shoulder refusing to get up. So I carried her downstairs and sat with her on the couch. Usually when I am in the livingroom she looks at all her toys and wants to get down and play then runs to the kitchen for a snack and milk. However, that didn't happen either. She just insisted I hold her close and not put her down. I rocked her a bit and when she didn't get up I offered her some milk. She still didn't budge. This was really odd behavior coming from her. So I took her to the kitchen and gave her half a banana. She took the banana but only wanted to eat it if I held her against my shoulder. She did manage to eat most of the banana before spitting the rest out. She didn't seem to interested in eating or drinking. Thats when I knew she must be under the weather a bit.
We don't have any OJ so I did the next best thing. I cut up an Orange (one of her favorite things to snack on) and gave it to her. She munched a bit then tossed it aside. She refused to eat breakfast and just wanted to be held. I put one some of her favorite shows to watch while I cooked Adrian some homemade Chicken/Veggie soup. She just sat on her chair and watched TV. She didn't play with her toys or run around. When the soup was done I spent some time with her before nap time. When 12:45 hit I decided to try to lay her down. I wanted to make it out to the gym while she slept so I was eager for her to go to bed.
I took her upstairs and she threw her normal fit for being put in her crib. I didn't want her cries to wake up Adrian so I ended up laying down on the floor next to her bed until she fell asleep. That didn't take long. I slowly got up and snuck out of her room. Thats when my "Mommy intuition" kicked in and made me second guess about going to the gym. I felt something bad would happen and that I should stay at home, so I did. I went downstairs and started to write her "Year in Review" blog.
After 20 mins had past I heard her wake up. She didn't just wake up, she blew up. She screamed uncontrollably and horrifically. I didn't know what happened so I raced upstairs to her room. Once I got to her crib she was just sitting there crying hysterically. I looked around to see if anything was wrong but couldn't find anything. I quickly picked her up and rocked her on the rocking chair trying to console her and calm her down. She would stop crying for a second then start up again really bad. Thats when I noticed that she felt really warm to me. Boarderline hot! I felt her forehead, cheeks, back, neck and chest and all were burning up! I quickly got concerned and took her to Adrian who was still sleeping. I knew he was sick too and didn't want to wake him but I was very concerned that Mia might be sick and have a fever. I woke him up and asked him if he thought she was warm too. He felt her but said no she felt normal. I was confused.. I was sure she was warmer than usual but I figured maybe I was just being a paranoid Mama. I took her back to her room and took her long sleeve shirt off and replaced it with an oversized cotton shirt. Adrian got up and followed me. Mia started crying again and you could tell she wasn't feeling good at all. All she wanted to do was cuddle and be comforted. She was acting really lethargic too. So I took her downstairs to change her diaper and clear out her nose (yes she had a runny nose too I forgot to mention that). Once I was down there Adrian felt her again, this time he agreed she did feel a bit warmer than usual. So we decided to take her temp. Since she doesn't let you hold down her arm to take her temp, Adrian just held her and I put the thermomitor under her arm. Sure enough it started to skyrocket and show no signs of slowing down... 98.3, 98.4, 98.5, 6,7,8,9... 99.1 and so on. When it finally stopped at 101.1 I was concerned. I quickly got dressed and ran off to Walgreens for some medicine and pedialite.
As Adrian stayed back and watched Mia for me I drove to Walgreens. I also called up my best Mommy mentor, my sis in law Lauren (who has 4 kids) and she gave me advice. I also called up my parents for their advice as well. I picked up some medicine for Mia AND Adrian and rushed back home. Once I got home I stripped Mia down to shorts and a shirt. I couldn't fully undress her since our house is very cold right now. I didn't want her to get worse. I gave her some baby tylonal, some ice chips (she loves ice), and a pedialite ice pop. After eating that she finally started to perk up some. She didn't have much of an appetite at all today and pretty much just snacked on and off on some bread, rice, crackers and water. She rested while we all watched Movies. She perked up for awhile and it seemed like her fever might have broke but she was still warm. Then about an hour before bed she started to heat up again. I gave her some more tylonal put new shorts on her and put her to bed early.
She went to sleep pretty quickly and now here I am. I just hope she has a restful night tonight. She needs to fight those germs that have invaded her tiny body. Hopefully the fever will break by tomorrow. I am not used to this, she never gets sick and this is nerve wracking. Well I better get some rest, taking care of both sick Adrian and Mia is no easy task.. I need to make sure I don't get sick myself!
