Current mood: accomplished
Mia has alot of little friends all born around the time she was (no more than a 4 months apart). Baby Koa, Baby D, Baby Sophie, Baby Gia, Baby Kai, and Baby Abby just to name a few. I constantly try to keep in touch with everyone to see how they are doing and to swap stories since all except Baby Sophie and Gia are babies to first time Mommys.
With all that being said, it is Baby Abby that I hear the most about, since her Mommy keeps blogs of her progess like I do for Mia. Her Mommy (Mel) and Daddy (Dan) are co-workers of Adrian and whom I met while playing WOW together almost 2 years ago. Mel and I got pregnant around the same time (only about 2 months apart) and our friendship grew over the course of our pregnancies. We had so much in common, both first time Mama's, both having girls, and both with similar backgrounds. We swap stories and advice as much as we can. So when I heard that Baby Abby is already a pro with using a straw AND can drink from juice boxes (shes 9 months) I quickly jumped at the chance to learn how she did it.
Mel told me to pick up one of those sippys from Wal-Mart (the kind with a straw built in) and work with her with that. So today Mia and I packed up and off to Wal-Mart we went. We had to go there anyways since her boombox, which plays her music at night finally broke. (I've had that boombox since Freshman year of College when I stayed in the dorms..ya its about 11 years old!) The CD player part is the only thing that broke but it wasn't worth the cost getting fixed since they sell them cheap at Wal-Mart. What surprised me a bit was the fact its so HARD to find any CD players anymore. It is a dead media since everything is MP3 and IPODs nows...and you can forget about trying to find a casset tape player either. They don't sell boomboxes with CDs anymore at BestBuy, Fry's or any other electronic store we checked out. Wal-Mart was the only one. Ok I know I went off topic for a bit there... sorry about that. Anyways we went to Wal-Mart and checked out their boombox section. After finding one that had all the things she needed (CD player, MP3 hook up, and Radio) for only $22 (Not bad)... it was off to the sippy cup section. Since it is so hot lately (It gets to the 100s everyday now) shes been downing water like nobody's business, and her tiny beginner sippy cup just doesn't cut it anymore, its to small (I think it only holds 4oz) So I picked up two Graduate sized sippys and one Numby Sippy that has a silicone straw on the end. After looking around a bit more it was off ot home we went. When I got home, I washed the new Staw Sippy, filled it with cool water and gave it to Mia.
At first she just chewed on the staw, then she started to suck out the water!!! She picked up on it right away (I think its due to all that practice with the other sippys). Then she wouldn't let go of it! She walked everywhere with it, just drinking water!! We thought it was so cute. I then took it away from her so she could have her lunch and she got MAD!!! so after lunch I had to give it back and she walked around drinking it like a big girl. YAY!!! Now the real test is, will she use a big people's staw? I will have to test that when we actually get some. We don't have any juice boxes either (she doesn't like juice) so we may to go to the store and pick some up. At least she took her first steps towards using a straw. YAY!!
Thanks again Baby Abby for learning so fast and thank you Mel for your advice!!! =)
****************** UPDATE ***************
We just got back from the store where we bought some jr. juices (it had clifford on it haha) it was 100% juice with no added sugars so I didn't mind trying with this. So after her dinner I let her have a juice box. At first she wasn't to sure what to do with it so she just chewed the tiny straw. I then drank some to show her how to drink the juice. Sure enough, after showing her 3-4 times she finally started to drink it! She looked up at me with these shocked eyes as if to say "oooooh yummy!!! what is this?!?!?!!?" and she drank and drank. I didn't let her finish it since its so close to bedtime but I wanted to see if she could do it. And she can!!! WHOOHOO!! the huge thing is... she drank juice and for once finally didn't reject it!! YAY!!!
